Four Types of Blow-In Insulation

In today’s blog, we discuss four different types of blow-in insulation, including mineral wool, rock wool, fiberglass, and cellulose insulation.

Mineral Wool

Mineral wool insulation has a loose fill. It comes from recycled materials, such as blast furnace slag or a fine-grain rock. Installers can combine mineral wool with a liquid for spraying onto open walls. Mineral wool also works for blowing into wall cavities. This type of blow-in insulation can cause health hazards if it’s inhaled. That’s why anyone who works with this type of insulation must clean every last bit of it up before a job is complete.

Fiberglass

Although you may be familiar with fiberglass batts or rolls, this type of insulation also has a blow-in variety. Fiberglass requires special handling as the fibers are made from little bits of glass. The wispy, compact strings of materials have acceptable R-values, but like with mineral wool and rock wool, installers must clean up every last bit of fiberglass. Otherwise, this kind of blow-in insulation can be hazardous to your health because of inhaling very tiny glass particles.

Rock Wool

Rock wool is similar to mineral wool for blow-in insulation. Rock wool and mineral wool are somewhat denser than cellulose insulation. That’s why you may not need as much as cellulose. It also fills into a wall cavity easier because gravity acts on it more readily due to its weight. Because rock wool and mineral wool are heavier, installers could have a harder time moving it around. The material may also settle within your walls, causing pockets of air that reduce the efficiency of insulation.

Cellulose Insulation

The best kind of blow-in insulation comes from cellulose. Products such as Nu-Wool cellulose insulation are made of recycled newspapers. There are no microscopic bits of dust from minerals, rocks, or glass that might get into you or your family’s lungs. Nu-Wool is safe to install and resists burning thanks to treatment with borate. Our technicians let you know how thick a layer of cellulose insulation needs to be for optimal effectiveness in your walls, attic, or crawl space.
